Stones in the Road

Written by Corbie of the Children of Malar, Winter 1197.

When we were young we lived in exile; in ignorance we lived and died,
Orphans of another country where our forebears dwelled with pride.
We thought we owned the land around us; for Albion we’d sweat and toil.
We worked the land, we tilled the fields - we thought our roots were in that soil.

But the stones in the road still remembered whence we came,
And they knew (perhaps with shame) that place was not our home.

In Albion the folk divided and the Lions lost their heart,
The children of King Arthur’s people fell to strife and dwelt apart.
The pride of Lions proved our downfall - we were cast out to dwell alone.
We went to find another country but we found our way home.

And the stones in the road led us back beyond the mists,
Back to where the Sleepers rest, back to Avalon.

The land that was lost for so long,
The land that made our people strong,
We are their daughters and their sons
Come back to claim our own.

While we were gone the Land grew dark. The shadows lengthened in the night.
We joined with kin we had forgotten to keep the fires bright.
New heroes made their sacrifices - I sing of Kai and Valinor,
Bringing light into the darkness to heal the Land once more.

And the stones in the road shine like diamonds in the dust
Since our past caught up with us and we made our way home
And the stones in the road will remember us when we are gone
And our children's children sing the song of the Return to Avalon.
