The Rescue of the Three Thousand

Alias the Bard.

Rise and hear, warriors true,
Of valiant deeds of old
Two legions were released from chains
Two legions strong and bold.

Two thousand Lions, stalwart all
One thousand valorous Fey,
Were trapped behind a magic wall
For three months and a day.
They tried to break out on their own
Their charges were repelled
Four handsome heroes were called upon
In magic they excelled.

Konin, Ramat, a Knight of Dros
Brennan the Death-Jester
Cried, “This wound upon our honour
We’ll not allow to fester.”

Their efforts were frustrated
‘Til they breached the wall with healing
Tho’ it cost them dearly
Their life-force it was stealing.

The portal they had opened
Was good for only three
One thousandth of the captives
Was all that they could free.

But when the portal opened
They charged it in a rush
Two captives died with awful cries
Mangled in the crush.

Konin Jefferson, hero gay
Stepped within the breach
For self-restraint and patience
The crowd he did beseech:

“I will return to set you free
At the rising of the dawn.”
“... I must,” he said beneath his breath,
“Lest I rue that I was born.”

Konin came with thirteen men
By Bob the Beggar guided
But how they’d work this miracle
All were undecided.

Ramat sacrificed his arm
For the healers beyond the wall
He caught the magic backlash,
On Kyot he did fall.

The healers worked in concert
The barricade between them
Enough to raise the faith and pride
Of all of those who’d seen them.

And thus by arcane wisdom
Painstakingly deployed
They let forth a triumphant shout
Their prison was destroyed.

The men remain in Avalon
But Talisman was come
To Rhino on his wedding day
Ere the setting of the sun.

And so three thousand lives were saved
All except for two
And to the braves who won the day
The highest praise is due.

Yet one thing more remaineth
Before my tale is ended
For the Captain of one Legion
Konin has befriended.

Use your imagination
Before these verses fade,
And ask yourself what Konin did
Behind the barricade.
